Using Borchert's work as inspiration.
From looking at Gui Borchert's work I could clearly see that typography portraits can be used to create all sorts of meanings through the uses of different words, colours, fonts and text angles. Therefore using Photoshop I attempted to replicate some of Borchert's work but putting my own ideas on it.
From Borchert's Obama portrait eight years ago I wanted to see how I could create my own modern portrait seeing as the US Presidential election was this year. Therefore I created a typography portrait of winning candidate Donald Trump out of the words of his phrase 'Make America Great Again' which he used as his slogan in the hope it would win him presidency. Unlike Borchert's piece though, I have chosen an image hear that contains lots of colour and I picked this image to focus on particularly because Trump's suit contains the colours red, white and blue which are the main colours related to the flag of the U.S.A. therefore I was hoping to make some sort of connection with this to the words.
The second typography portrait I create was this one of artist Drake. Unlike the Trump portrait though, I have organised the words in this image horizontally and vertically which I believe creates a slightly crazy and funky feel. Drake in this portrait is actually built up of lyrics from his song 'Headlines' which I chose because I thought the sections of text in this image actually look like little headlines and they also relate to how the words are overlapped as the song itself contains a sense of confusion. I have also purposely enlarge some of the key words like 'Problem' as I believe they carry a lot more meaning to them than some of the other words therefore increasing the size of them creates added emphasis in my opinion.
With this image I have gone away from Borchert's typical typography portrait style by filling the whole picture with one word. Within this image is a picture of The Humber Bridge and it;s simply made up of the word 'HULL'. In my opinion when I think what other people immediately think about Hull, one of the things I think is The Humber Bridge therefore this image I have created is a representation of Hull and what it contains. With the word 'HULL' only containing four letters I believe it's created a more effective effect than a longer word would as I was able to fit the word in quite a lot and I believe the way it's organised as created visually appealing line shapes between the words.
Overall, despite the time these pieces took to create I believe it was successful and its something I believe I will definitely look to develop when looking at my final theme. However for originality, I want to use my own images so they mean something to me rather than a group of people. For example I could take images of myself and complete several typography portraits whilst changing the types of text, the colour of the text, the size of the text and a wide range of other features I could eventually develop.
